If you’re a macaroon fan, then meet your new favorite snack bar. Like a solid, non-alcoholic piña colada, these bars are a tropical coconut blast. Using at most three ingredients (coconut, rice syrup and either almonds, mango or pineapple), these 264 calorie snacks are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and very filling.
Yes, the almond Oskri bars do taste pretty darn sweet, but surprisingly they only pack 11 grams of sugar, which is less than half the amount of sugar many other mainstream snack and protein bars have. The rice syrup also takes longer to absorb than cane sugar, so you won’t get the major glucose spike like you would from eating a candy bar. Additionally, the fat content (23 grams total per bar) of these bars also helps to slow the absorption of the sugar.
Now, before you raise an eyebrow about the fat content here, let’s take a closer look at the types of fat in these bars. An excellent source of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), coconut has been shown to potentially raise the body’s metabolic rate, and can also support digestive tract health. Beyond that, the fatty acids found in coconut, namely the saturated fat called lauric acid, has been identified as having a potent antimicrobial, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. All beneficial, especially to those with digestive issues.
Maybe the best part of these moist, compact, and simple bars is the cost, which averages somewhere around $0.89 per bar. (You can also buy in bulk on Amazon.com). So as a lunchbox snack, a backpacking staple, or an after dinner treat, these coconut delights will keep you going for hours while serving up a slice of the beach. Look for them in the bar section of your local health food store.
